Tufting is the dominant production method for commercial and residential carpets worldwide. In the tufting process, yarn is mechanically punched through a primary backing fabric using a multi-needle bar, creating either loops (loop pile) or cut ends (cut pile) on the face of the carpet.

The result is a textile that is dimensionally stable, dense, and highly versatile in terms of appearance and performance. Tufting is faster and more cost-effective than weaving for most commercial applications, while offering better surface definition and pile density than needle-punch products.

What sets MercuryFlooring apart as a tufting manufacturer

Our tufting production has been running since 1987. Today, we operate multiple industrial tufting lines with a combined annual output exceeding 3.5 million m², making us one of the larger contract tufting manufacturers in Western Europe. Every step - tufting, backing, finishing, labelling - takes place in our 19,000 m² facility in Belgium.

What Is Tufting and Why Does It Matter for Your Product?

MercuryFlooring tufts primarily with solution-dyed polyamide (PA6 and PA6.6). Understanding why this matters protects your product and your brand's reputation.

Solution-Dyed Polyamide: The Right Yarn for your Products

Superior colourfastness

Colour pigments are integrated into the polymer during production, not applied to the surface. The colour cannot fade under UV exposure, heavy foot traffic, or commercial cleaning.

Better stain resistance

No surface dye to displace or dissolve. Spills and staining agents cannot alter the colour because the colour is structural, not cosmetic.

Batch-consistent colour

No lot-to-lot colour variation. Repeat orders 6 or 12 months later match the original production run, critical for branded ranges and restocking programmes.

Correct for high-traffic use

Entrance mats and commercial floor coverings are used in conditions that destroy surface-dyed yarns. Solution-dyeing is the only technically correct specification for these applications.

Batch-consistent colour

Solution dyeing requires significantly less water than conventional dyeing processes, supporting both our ISO 14001 environmental management and your sustainability reporting.

Tufting Constructions and Technical Specifications

  • Gauge — needle spacing; determines pile density

  • Pile height — from low-profile commercial to decorative

  • Face weight — yarn per m², affects density and cost

  • Primary backing — polypropylene woven (standard)

  • Secondary backing — PVC, TPE, felt or latex

  • Dimensions & shapes — custom cut to spec

Adjustable parameters

Loop pile

Loops left intact after tufting. Highly durable and easy to clean under commercial use conditions. Standard construction for entrance mats and commercial floor coverings. Excellent dirt-trapping performance.

Cut pile

Loops cut to create individual tufts with a softer, plusher surface appearance. Used for decorative rugs, hospitality products, and branded floor coverings where aesthetics take priority.

Cut and loop

Combination construction creating sculptured or patterned surface effects. Available subject to equipment and volume requirements.

A tufted carpet without a secondary backing is a semi-finished product. MercuryFlooring applies backing in-house, delivering a complete, market-ready product from a single supplier in Belgium.

PVC backing

Industry standard. Excellent grip, moisture resistance, and dimensional stability. Available in compact and foamed variants across a range of weights and thicknesses.

TPE backing

Thermoplastic elastome. Recyclable, halogen-free, with a comparable performance to PVC. Increasingly required by retailers and markets with sustainability specifications.

Felt backing

Softer underfoot. Protects hard flooring surfaces and prevents movement. Standard in residential rug applications and hospitality products on hard floors.
